Deborah Woolf to join the judges at The Goodwood Revival 2013

For the third year running, vintage loving Londoners have nominated and voted for their favourite vintage businesses in The Vintage Guide to London’s Vintage Awards.  Deborah Woolf Vintage was runner-up in the ‘Best Designer Vintage shop’. The final round saw 1,800 individual votes from the public.  Deborah Woolf Vintage, open 5 years this month, has become a destination for collectors, stylists and designers looking for inspirational vintage fashion.

A happy customer wears 1960s Diorling suit for Christian Dior in black and white geometric print cotton. 1960s enamel mesh handbag with white lucite clasp. 1960s Bally Suisse silver leather shoes with block heel. 1960s white crochet gloves. 1960s white enamel Trifari choker and a pair of 1960s old stock sunglasses.
With a vintage boutique on Church Street plus a studio archive within Alfies Antique Market, Deborah’s extensive fashion history knowledge and great skill at helping clients find what flatters, ensures any outfit will look authentic and chic. Stock ranges from 1900s to 1970s, with many items from British, European and American fashion designers of the 1960s and 70s with emphasis on British Boutique and print designers, such as Liberty,  Biba and Ossie Clark. Deborah stocks a small range of vintage menswear and accessories. She currently has two rare original 1950s and 1960s Drape jackets for sale, for the Teddy Boy and early Beatles look. She also has a range of Victorian to 1960s baby and childrenswear.

The Goodwood Revival is the worlds most popular historic motor race meeting, the only event of it’s kind to be staged entirely in a nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It holds a dedicated Ladies Day as well as the daily Best Dressed competition for both Ladies and Gents. This year Deborah and her husband William have been asked to join the expert judges at The Goodwood Revival  ‘Best Dressed’ competition. Regulars to all three days of The Goodwood Revival for several years, Deborah and her picture frame maker husband William have both previously been short listed in the event’s Best Dressed competition.

The Best Dressed competition is run by the Creative Director of Men's File Archive Nick Clements and fashion photographer Matt Hind. Nick and Matt will be at The Goodwood Revival again this year picking out candidates for the coveted ‘Best Dressed’ award. Those that look the part and embrace the spirit of dressing up with élan and sophistication will be invited to be photographed in the Men's File on-site studio. Prizes will be awarded by the judges each day for categories to be confirmed.

Baby Jewellery

In recent times, jewellery for babies has become more practical, for example to hold a jacket closed, a bib in place or keep a dummy safe. In ancient history, babies were adorned with ornate jewellery to denote their place in the tribe. In the Victorian era, coral beads, silver lockets, bead necklaces and little bracelets were fashionable. Coral was thought to ward off ill health so babies wore small beaded necklaces and bracelets of coral. The word "Baby" would usually be embossed on tiny brooches and bracelets, these were often given as christening presents, which would become keepsakes passed down from generation to generation.

A selection of vintage baby jewellery from the 1920s - 1960s. Offered by Paola & Iaia - The Originals
Most antique/vintage baby jewellery is quite fancy, many of the pendants are heart shaped, bangles have elaborate designs, while some are plain to allow the plate to be engraved with the baby's birth date or name. Matching necklaces or bracelets for the parents were also common. In Italy, charms are traditional gifts, the charm depicts what is wished for the baby's future,  for example a bear charm for a boy symbolises masculinity and strength, a ballerina symbolises gracefulness.

Cute little brooches became popular in the mid century, usually caricature's of animals.

Swansea Baroness Burdett Coutts Plates

We recently came across two very rare porcelain plates in Alfies. Both pieces are part of a large Swansea service made for the banker Thomas Coutts in 1815. The dinner plates are part of a collection of 320 porcelain pieces. Two of these beautiful plates can be found at Chris Janes Antiques on the ground floor.

The plates were part of a service which belonged to Angela, Baroness Burdett-Coutts who died in 1906.
Angela Burdett-Coutts was a 19th century philanthropist and the daugther of Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet and the former Sophia Coutts, daughter of banker Thomas Coutts. In 1837 she became the wealthiest woman in England when she inherited her grandfather's fortune.

The service was sold at Christie's on 9th May 1922, where it was noted the service had been ordered by the banker Thomas Coutts from Mortlocks in 1816, in celebration of his marriage to the actress Harriet Mellon.

It has been said that the Queen also owns a plate from the same service!

New Dealer: Lauren-Nicole Boutique

On the second floor of Alfies, you will find a wonderful little stand full of unique vintage fashion clothing and accessories, which Audrey Horca has specially sourced for her shop Lauren-Nicole Boutique.

Please tell us about yourself / business

My name is Audrey Horca, I am a Business of Fashion graduate of The London College of Fashion and a Makeup Artist of 7 years to date. I started my entrepreneurial career in April 2011 opening and launching Kulaydoscope Creative as a freelance makeup service at Moondoll’s fashion fundraising event ‘Hope for Japan’ at Kensington Roof Gardens London.

I then went on to managing and hosting Kulaydoscope Creative’s very own and first independent event ‘Proudly Pinoy Araw ng Kalayaan 113th Independence Day Philippines’ at Anaya Mayfair London, which was a showcase of Filipino talents in the music & fashion industries through live music performances and a fashion show.

In August 2011 during a trip to the Philippines, my brother in-law, James Laurel opened a fashion boutique, HMRM7274 (Homeroom) with fellow friends Richard Herrera & Brent Javier that work in the fashion industry, in Makati Manila Philippines. The boutique specialised in bringing niche and exclusive brands to the Philippines. James felt that there was something lacking and wanted to have unique British brands instore which is when my vintage brand Lauren-Nicole London was born.

In May 2012 Lauren-Nicole London opened its first London-based retail outlet alongside Moondoll Boutique at the Hampstead Emporium, London. Unfortunately, the business was short-lived due to personal unforeseen commitments.

A year on Lauren-Nicole Boutique has opened its first independent retail outlet at Alfies Antique Market.

Lauren-Nicole Boutique specialises in carefully selecting Vintage fashion & accessories mostly from the 1960’s to 1980’s that can be easily incorporated in today’s modern fashion trends to create a unique and individual look. We also offer vintage-inspired hairstyling & makeup services on both instore and private services.

Lauren-Nicole Boutique believes in vintage being in a modern world, meaning being inspired by moments and physical things influencing the present. Lauren-Nicole Boutique is not just a brand it is a lifestyle. We also promote and support historic and history in the making events and exhibitions. We hope to go into selling antiques for the home in the near future.

What attracted you to vintage fashion?

I guess I was ‘attracted’ to vintage clothes / fashion upon playing dress-up with my Grandma’s and Mother's clothes and accessories. I later borrow clothes from my mother and still do. Lauren-Nicole is named after my two daughters Raichelle Lauren & Jaimelise Nicole who now also have taken to playing dress-up and borrowing my Mother's and my clothes.

I believe with fashion, what goes around comes back around.
