Ettore Sottsass

What piece would you love to find?
I know it when I see it. I don't set out to find a piece. It's what gazes back at me from an object or work of art - the like of collecting.

New Dealer: Dream Retro

Retro enthusiast, Jeniffer Jackson, turned her passion for the 1950s into a full-time business. Her love for vintage isn't limited to the 1950s, her stock also includes standout pieces from the 1930s to mid 1960s. Visit Dream Retro on the second floor at Alfies for all things kitsch and slightly quirky.

We spoke with Jeniffer to find out more...

Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you specialise in?
I specialise in vintage handbags and compacts, plus barware. I enjoy the glamour and the lifestyle of the Mid-Century.

How did you become a dealer?
A long time fan of the 1950s and a love of early Hollywood films, turned into a passion for buying/collecting and eventually selling in Portobello market, Camden and Walthamstow. Plus collecting handbags and clothing to wear to the '40s and '50s clubs began to takeover my home! I needed to start trading in order to buy more items and escape the 9-5 rat race.

Your shop is called Dream Retro, 'retro' is a word  that seems to be underused these days, what does it mean to you and why did you choose 'retro' over 'vintage' for your business name?
Retro for me is a way of living, whereas vintage seems overused - some items referred to as vintage are not that old.

Why are you fond of retro fashion?
Because I find it striking, artistic and so much better than what we have today. The quality of the items, the style and design is unforgettable.

How would you describe your stock?
I would describe my stock as colourful, kitsch and eclectic, even slightly quirky.

Do you have any personal favourites in you collection?
The Andrew Seller handbag, the black glass atomiser and the circular skirt pattern are all favourites of mine.

Personal favourite: Vintage Andrew Seller Bag

Personal favourite: Black glass atomiser

Personal favourite: Circular skirt pattern

What piece would you love to find?
A lucite glass handbag, this is sought after as one of the most beautiful handbags, they are still out there and I would love to own one.

Do you collect anything?
I still collect the more unusual bags, perfume bottles and other items from the retro era.

New Dealer: Jason Smallwood

Jason Smallwood is the newest edition to the dealers at Alfies, and he's bought with him a very unique collection of pieces - many with unique histories too.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have been collecting 'Outsider Art' for about 25 years now. It's just a genre of Art that interests me. Usually the narrative or the story of the artist is mostly of a non academic background and rarely were they accepted by the class of the academic art world, involving gallery exhibitions. There is also usually some form of mental illness involved in the character of the artist.

How did you become a dealer?
I was a collector before I was a dealer and it's just something that grew into what I now do for a living. I have sold collections of rare paintings, I have discovered and owned some of the biggest buyers in this field of art. Having a love and passion for this kind of art has really helped my business as an art dealer.

How would you describe your stock?
My stock is an interesting mix of self-taught, outsider, non-academic and visionary painters and sculptors..all with very interesting backgrounds.

Do you have any personal favourites in your collection?
Current favourites in my stock right now are two rare and original 1971 private language paintings by the Plymouth based artist Robert Lenkiewicz. These were personal paintings of Lenkiewicz's that have been in a private collection for years, so now is the first time they have been viewed by the public. I met Lenkiewicz when he was alive and visited his studio in the nineties. To me he is one of the great "outsider" painters. He owned a 17th century skeleton of a woman called Ursula Kemp who was killed by trial for Witchcraft, and also embalmed the body of his friend and kept him in the drawer of his studio.

Do you have a favourite gallery to visit in London?
The Gallery of Everything on Chiltern Street.

Do you collect anything?
I collect lots of things, some useless and some beautiful, but mostly they are interesting and bizarre.

If you could own any piece of art from history what would it be?
I would love to own a painting called 'Peter and the Fisherman' by Mary Barnes circa 1960s/70s. I have owned various works by Mary Barnes at different times, and have sold them on to private buyers. But this one is a fantastic painting and one I would keep hold of.

You can find Jason at Alfies Antique Market, stand F051-51. Below are a few examples of items you'll find in his stand...

The Second Floor Gallery: David Harper

David Harper has recently moved into the Second Floor Gallery, you'll find his vivid artwork adorning the light filled space, along with limited edition prints and a carefully curated selection of lighting and furniture.

David Harper

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m an art and antiques dealer / broker and artist…also a BBC TV presenter.

How would your describe your stock?
My stock at Alfies dates from the 17th century to mid 20th century furniture, lighting and sculpture - then into the 21st century century with my paintings.

Do you have any personal favourites in your collection?
Currently my favourite piece is a crocodile embossed leather chair. Amazingly I recently bought this chair back after having it made and then sold as a one off for an exhibition 15 years ago.

What piece would you love to find?
I’ve found many very special pieces over the years, but coming across a forgotten Picasso would be quite nice!

Do you have a favourite gallery to visit in London?
My favourite galleries in London are the museums…not very much in design is actually that new. Look closely at modern shapes and styles and you’ll see images from the past. I get inspiration from these places for my paintings.

Do you collect anything?
I collect classic cars.

If you could own any piece of art from history what would it be?
An early 1960s Bentley Continental Convertible…as much a piece of art as anything I’ve ever seen.

Here's a selection of eye-catching pieces you'll find in the Second Floor Gallery...

New Dealer: Creative Jewellery Company

This week we put the spotlight on Creative Jewellery Company, who have recently joined Alfies.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your company?

I come from a family of talented creative people, grandmother who was wardrobe mistress and dressmaker at the Old Vic Theatre, father and grandfather bespoke tailors to the entertainment and sporting industry.

I started off training at the Central St Martins school in Aldgate, (formally Sir John Cass School of Art), gained further knowledge at a jewellery company in Greater London, after two years was asked to join an upmarket fine jewellery company, in London's fashionable Marylebone High Street whose clients included celebrities and dignitaries, I setup a workshop there where I developed my abilities of designing and making fine jewellery to understanding and interpreting customers'  needs and requirements in the field of jewellery making, repairing and restoring.

Being passionate about jewellery making is something that comes from the heart (in my opinion).

My work varies from a silver range of jewellery with a very unusual range of "ripple effect" items, where no two pieces are the same, to alterations and restorations, (example, a ring that was driven over and was completely flat, was restored to its former glory rather than being scrapped), to creating unique bespoke creations from paper sketch to works of art.

Do you have a personal favourite in your collection?

The diamond heart and tsavorite hinged bracelt, the Mimi Cross, the diamond flower & petal ring which is made of 29 seperate components of platinum, the Gold Flying V guitar pendant and the silver "Elements of inner earth" pendant, that took many attempts to create the design I was looking for.

What is your favourite metal to work with ?

I prefer 18 carat gold and platinum, but love silver as well.

You also do jewellery repair are there any differences in doing repairs to new, vintage and antique jewellery?

Yes, there are many differences, most important for me is checking for any previous repairs before starting work on the item.

What would you recommend for maintenance and care of jewellery, gold and silver?

TLC, treat jewellery with care, clean and gently polish the metal with soft silver or jewellery cleaning cloths, never use oil based solutions for cleaning any stones... Always get advice from a reputable jeweller for liquid cleaning any jewellery with stones in.

What is your favourite part of the job in your work as a jewellery designer and repair expert?

That's easy, the look of joy and excitement on clients faces when they finally see the finished article, the hugs are bonus too.

It's a great feeling as a craftsman to be able to put a smile on so many people's face and to create objects of art that hopefully will last a lifetime.
